Mastering contracting conversation

Aligning Expectations with Your Client

Audience: Trainers, Coaches, Learning & Development Professionals

Format: Interactive workshop

When a client purchases a training program, they usually have a mental picture of what they believe they are buying. However, in practice, these expectations often differ from what the trainer intends to deliver. Misalignment at the start can lead to unclear responsibilities, friction during delivery, and reduced impact of the learning intervention.
This workshop helps trainers and coaches strengthen their contracting skills so that both parties begin the collaboration with clarity, mutual understanding, and realistic expectations.

What you will learn

During this workshop, you will develop the skills needed to conduct a well‑structured and professional contracting conversation with the client. The focus lies on:
  • Preparing the contracting conversation
Understanding the client’s context, intentions, constraints, and desired outcomes — before stepping into the meeting.
  • Leading a clear and balanced conversation
Asking effective questions, validating assumptions, and exploring expectations to ensure both sides share the same picture of the intended training.
  • Defining the client’s responsibilities
Identifying the specific efforts, resources, access, and commitment required from the client to make the training successful.
  • Clarifying your own contribution as a trainer
Being explicit about the methodology, expertise, boundaries, and the added value that you bring to the intervention.
  • Considering group conditions and learning environment
Discussing the participants’ background, team dynamics, organisational context, and other conditions that may influence the learning process.
  • Honouring your professional autonomy and craftsmanship
Recognising that as a trainer, you bring not only experience but also professional judgment, and making that explicit within the agreement.

Why this workshop matters

A well‑designed contracting process reduces misunderstandings, strengthens professional relationships, and creates the foundation for successful learning outcomes. Trainers who master this skill are better equipped to navigate complex client dynamics while protecting their professional integrity.
